The Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey - LLANJ, the largest Latino advocacy group in New Jersey, is looking for qualified interns to assist LLANJ staff members fulfill the objectives of the organization in 2009 at LLANJ Headquarters located in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
We focus our work in four key areas: Capacity Building, Institutional Development, Community Organizing and Public Relations.

Graphic Design | Multimedia Intership
Location: New Brunswick, NJ

Description:
We are looking for an ambitious student to assist with our Community Relations efforts & Media relations. The applicant should be someone who desires to be part of a team atmosphere. This is an unpaid position; however the student will receive academic credit. The selected intern will assist with creation of publications, invitations, flyers and display materials. Candidates must be able to commit between 10 and 20 hours per week to the internship and must be available to work at least 2 days per week for duration of at least 8 weeks.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate, Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree candidate, preferably in Graphic Design, Liberal Arts; or Photography.
- Exceptional writing abilities;
- Proficiency in Spanish a plus;
- Resourceful, detail-oriented and organized;
- Enthusiastic and creative, with a passion for Latino empowerment and advocacy,
- Capabilities shooting and editing digital video (Windows Movie Maker, or DVD Studio Pro) a plus;
- Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, and
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook.

Fundraising Internship

Description:
We are seeking a self-motivated individual with outstanding writing skills to work closely with the Director of Development of LLANJ. The Fundraising intern serves as a research person and assists the development efforts of the organization. Candidates must be able to commit between 10 and 20 hours per week to the internship and must be available to work at least 2 days per week for duration of at least 8 weeks.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate, Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree candidate, preferably in English, Public Administration, Journalism, or Liberal Arts;
- Prior fundraising experience and/or solid knowledge of foundation grant procedures a plus;
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, particularly Excel, and Internet research;
- Strong interpersonal communication, writing, editing, research, and organizational skills;
- Flexibility to undertake a wide variety of tasks to support the fundraising efforts of the organization;
- A positive, hard working, team player with a demonstrated commitment to Latino advocacy work and an interest in non-profit administration; and
- General understanding of issues affecting the Latino community particularly as it relates to New Jersey a plus.
Activities:
- Research grant-making prospects including foundations and individuals;
- Assist with drafting and editing of grant proposals and reports;
- Assist with production and execution of donor cultivation mailings and other outreach efforts to donors;
- Conduct research on foundations to identify new donors whose grants portfolio match the program priorities of LLANJ; and
- Assist in the development of a donor database.

Journalism Intership

The Journalism Intern serves as editor of our press releases and assists with other electronic and Web-based communication with our members and constituents. Candidates must be able to commit between 10 and 20 hours per week to the internship and must be available to work at least 2 days per week for duration of at least 8 weeks.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate, Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree candidate, preferably in English, Journalism, Public Relations, or Liberal Arts;
- Previous internship or writing experiences combined with a Journalism or English major desirable; previous newsletter experiences a plus;
- Excellent writing, editing and organizational skills;
- Attention to detail;
- Willing to work in fast-paced environment;
- Self-starter who can take direction and contribute idea;
- The ability to work independently on projects while meeting deadlines;
- Photography skills also a plus; and
- Microsoft Office: Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint.
Activities:
- Research and gather story ideas;
- Research for stories where LLANJ appear during the last ten years;
- Coordinating and developing monthly newsletter, including soliciting article submissions and creating other venues for LLANJ to have a voice;
- Working with the Press Director to develop Press Advisories, Press Releases and Press Events;
- Assist staff in producing internal and external communications, including a monthly e-newsletter, news updates on the LLANJ web portal;
- Fact check, proofread, and edit as necessary; and
- Performs related duties as required.

Grass Roots Internship

Description:
We are seeking a self-motivated individual to serve as a Grass Roots Intern for LLANJ. The Grass Roots Intern will work closely with LLANJ Statewide Community Organizer. The position will require targeted campaign research, drafting of campaign action alerts, phone calls to supporters, digital networking with online tools such as Facebook and some data management pertaining to the strategic development of a local, county, or statewide campaign. The ideal intern/volunteer will have proficiency researching current political issues, ability to execute tasks independently and a basic understanding and of grassroots/advocacy organizing. Candidates must be able to commit between 10 and 20 hours per week to the internship and must be available to work at least 2 days per week for duration of at least 8 weeks.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate, Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree candidate, preferably in English, Journalism, Sociology, Labor Relations, Political Science, Social Sciences or Liberal Arts;
- Excellent writing, editing and organizational skills;
- Willing to work in fast-paced environment;
- Self-starter who can take direction and contribute idea;
- The ability to work independently on projects while meeting deadlines;
- Microsoft Office: Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint.
Activities:
- Work with LLANJ Statewide Community Organizer on research and advocacy on domestic Latino issues;
- Compile and maintain constituent-based profiles that will inform the local, county or state-wide grassroots campaign strategy;
- Make phone calls to ally organizations, student groups and individuals on the behalf of the campaign;
- Draft Action Alerts and messages to be distributed via digital networking sites;
- Assist staff in producing internal and external communications, including a monthly e-newsletter, news updates on the LLANJ web portal; and
- Performs related duties as required.

We are seeking a self-motivated individual to serve as an Administrative Intern for LLANJ. The Administrative will report to LLANJ Staff Members. The intern may be assigned additional tasks as appropriate to his/her skills and interests. Candidates must be able to commit between 10 and 20 hours per week to the internship and must be available to work at least 2 days per week for duration of at least 8 weeks.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate, Bachelor’s degree candidate, preferably in Liberal Arts; Business Administration, Social Sciences, Social Work, Latino American Studies, Political Science, or Labor Studies.
- Dedication to and respect for the Latino community;
- Good interpersonal and organizational skills, self-starter, and highly motivated;
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently;
- Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.
Activities:
- Administrative responsibilities include filing, computer data entry, preparing mailings;
- Assisting with arranging meetings;
- Assist in planning and organizing events and Board of Delegates meetings;
- Assist in Planning special events;
- Outreach to members and participants of LLANJ events;
- Performs related duties as required;
